ABOUT THE ROLE
Join a team building the next generation of AI-powered shopping experiences for millions of car buyers and sellers. As a Backend Software Engineer, you will help replatform AI services from Java to a modern Python-based architecture and contribute to conversational and agentic experiences that make vehicle discovery more personalized, transparent, and intuitive. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to deliver scalable, production-ready backend solutions supporting AI-driven customer journeys.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Build and operate backend services and APIs using Java (and Python, FastAPI), and established platform patterns to power AI-driven products
- Contribute to conversational workflows built with LangGraph, including routing, handler execution, context management, guardrails, streaming capabilities, and guided shopping experiences
- Take ownership of backend features and service integrations that improve reliability, scalability, and customer experience across AI-powered applications
- Collaborate closely with engineers, product managers, designers, data scientists, and domain service teams to deliver well-aligned and impactful solutions
- Define and maintain service contracts while integrating with search, personalization, shopper profile, LLM, and other consumer platform services
- Deliver production-ready software through comprehensive testing, monitoring, performance optimization, rollout planning, and operational excellence
- Support observability initiatives, troubleshoot production issues, and participate in maintaining service health and system stability
- Work with senior engineers to evolve architecture decisions into maintainable, extensible, and reliable software solutions
REQUIREMENTS
- Professional experience building and operating backend services using Java or a similar programming language (Python)
- Strong knowledge of HTTP APIs, microservice design, service boundaries, data modeling, automated testing, and production operations
- Proficiency with AWS and cloud-based application development and deployment
- Solid experience with data access layers, SQL databases, caching strategies, and storage solutions
- Strong knowledge of data structures, algorithms, and complexity analysis
- Familiarity with FastAPI or other modern Python web frameworks
- Experience integrating distributed services through APIs, shared contracts, or schema-based communication
- Familiarity with LangChain, LangGraph, LLM integrations, agent orchestration, asynchronous processing, or stateful workflow development
- Understanding of observability, software quality practices, performance optimization, and production readiness for backend systems
- Experience with search, recommendation engines, personalization platforms, marketplaces, or other consumer-facing products is a plus
- Strong communication skills with the ability to discuss progress, tradeoffs, dependencies, and risks effectively
- Collaborative, curious, and proactive mindset with the ability to navigate ambiguity and contribute within an evolving architecture
