ABOUT THE ROLE
Join a strategic Platform-as-a-Service initiative that enables engineering teams to build, deploy, and operate microservices at enterprise scale on AWS and Kubernetes. You will work with one of the UK's largest supermarket chains, contributing to a platform team responsible for more than 1,500 production workloads and helping drive scalability, reliability, and operational excellence across business-critical applications.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Design, build, and operate AWS platform capabilities, including accounts, networking, load balancers, RDS, and IAM, ensuring secure and scalable environments
- Own and evolve Kubernetes platform services on EKS, improving developer experience, accelerating delivery, and reducing operational risk across the organization
- Collaborate closely with product teams, engineers, and stakeholders to gather feedback, prioritize platform enhancements, and deliver enterprise-scale capabilities
- Maintain infrastructure as code using Terraform for AWS resources, Kubernetes clusters, and supporting services, ensuring consistency, auditability, and repeatability
- Build and manage CI/CD pipelines with GitHub Actions and GitOps practices using Flux or ArgoCD, while maintaining Helm charts for deployment and version control
- Configure and support Istio service mesh capabilities for traffic management, observability, and security across platform and application services
- Implement and integrate technologies such as Crossplane and HashiCorp Vault where applicable, supporting cloud resource provisioning and secrets management
- Develop automation tools and scripts while supporting observability platforms, monitoring, logging, governance, and platform reliability initiatives
REQUIREMENTS
- Strong hands-on experience with AWS services, including networking, load balancers, RDS, IAM, and multi-account environments in production
- Proven expertise with Kubernetes and Amazon EKS in large-scale Platform-as-a-Service environments supporting high-volume workloads and microservices
- Practical experience with Terraform, including module development, state management, and environment orchestration
- Strong knowledge of Helm, GitHub Actions, and GitOps tools such as Flux or ArgoCD
- Hands-on experience with Istio or a comparable service mesh for observability, security, and traffic management
- Good understanding of secure infrastructure practices, secrets management, network security, monitoring, logging, and alerting
- Experience with Crossplane, HashiCorp Vault, and automation using TypeScript, Go, Python, or Bash is considered an advantage
- Familiarity with observability tools such as ELK/EFK, Prometheus, Thanos, Grafana, New Relic, as well as Kafka and OPA Gatekeeper is beneficial
- Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and the ability to collaborate with both technical and non-technical stakeholders in a cloud-native environment
