About the role
In this role, you will provide hands-on technical leadership, designing, building, and supporting reliable, scalable Java-based solutions across applications, integrations, data platforms, and third-party products. Our client is one of the largest UK supermarket chains, serving millions of customers through hundreds of stores, where your engineering decisions directly influence retail efficiency and customer experience.
Responsibilities
- Lead end-to-end technical delivery, including solution design, implementation, and support
- Improve solution reliability, scalability, and maintainability
- Collaborate with engineers, third-party delivery partners, and business stakeholders
- Design and build cloud-based services and applications using AWS, Java 21 or later, and Spring Boot, ensuring solutions are robust, maintainable, and aligned with agreed architecture and engineering standards
- Contribute to solution options, feasibility assessments, estimates and delivery plans, providing engineering input that shapes scope, timelines and resource needs
- Provide technical direction and guidance to engineers and third-party delivery partners, fostering consistent engineering practices and adherence to technical standards
- Review solution designs, code, configurations and technical documentation to ensure quality, consistency, security and alignment with architecture and engineering standards
- Identify technical risks, constraints, dependencies and technical debt early in the delivery lifecycle, and work with stakeholders to manage, mitigate or remediate them
Requirements
- Strong proficiency with Java 21 or later, with 6+ years of experience building production-grade backend services and APIs
- Solid knowledge of Spring Boot and the broader Spring ecosystem for developing scalable, maintainable microservices
- Advanced experience with AWS cloud services, including designing, deploying, and operating workloads in a production environment
- Strong proficiency with event-driven architectures and practical experience with Kafka for high-throughput, resilient messaging
- Proficiency in Kubernetes for container orchestration, deployment, scaling, and operational management of microservices
- Practical experience with building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines that automate build, test, and deployment processes
- Upper-Intermediate level of English or higher for collaboration with international teams
